The Brand

The idea behind the SNAKE Condom brand was developed by local youth in Mildura who worked closely with Marie Stopes Australia, Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO), Mildura Aboriginal Health Service (MAHS) and an advertising agency called Cummins Nitro.

As suggested by a number of people, the new condom was named SNAKE, which is symbolic to Aboriginal culture. Most importantly SNAKE lends itself to some fun and cheeky innuendo and jokes to which Aboriginal teenagers can relate to.

The SNAKE Condoms logo also includes elements considered important by the Mildura community, including strong use of the colors of the Aboriginal flag (red, yellow and black), as well as a blend of traditional and modern Aboriginal art. SNAKE Condoms are also flavoured: red for strawberry, yellow for vanilla and black for chocolate. They are regular thickness and are sold in packs of three.

The Advertising

SNAKE Condoms are advertised on radio, in the newspapers and posters.

The clever and cheeky advertising slogans were developed by young Aboriginal people. Some of these slogans were used on the back of buses to promote the first ever launch of SNAKE Condoms in Mildura. Visit the Fun Stuff section to learn more about the Deadliest Slogan Competition.

Two radio advertisements were also developed. The first ad featured Aaron Pederson (actor of the Water Rats and City Homicide TV series) and the second ad featured another well-known Aboriginal actor, Tony Briggs.
